The Sonic Screwdriver Final

Here is my finalized submission for stop motion and sound. Basically when I approached this, I wanted the sound effects in my movie to be literal and believable (to an extent, because of course this movie is science fiction). So I went through the frames and decided which sounds I needed for each action. Most are actual sounds that objects will make, but I did need some Doctor Who sounds to add that science fiction touch. So on the BBC Doctor Who website I found the actual sounds of a sonic screwdriver, the TV show's theme song, and some additional effects that I thought would be fun to include.

Constructing the soundtrack to my stop motion was the even easier than the stop motion itself. I gathered all my sounds and created a spread sheet that mapped out which sounds would go where and their duration. Referencing my spread sheet, I began to piece together the sound with the video. I added the Doctor Who theme song as background music so the silent parts of the film wouldn't be awkward or boring. Some sounds I had to cut or lengthen in order to be consistent with the video, but that was easy. I didn't need to do much sound editing because the quality of all my sounds were pretty clear, even if I had recorded them myself. Very impressed with my iPhone for being capable of that! The only major sound editing I had to do was to make some sounds louder or quieter when overlapped with another sound at the same time so they wouldn't drown each other out and you would be able to hear the more significant sounds better while still having the other sounds for dynamism.

I am very pleased with how the sound turned out. There is nothing I would want to take out and nothing I would add (adding more would just be too much). Enjoy!

Vector Project

For my vector project I decided to redesign the cover art for "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. I chose this because I was my favorite book when I was growing up and a few years back when the movie came out it was just as awesome. Of course when I was young I thought nothing of the theme of the book and just read it for fun, but now that I'm older I understand the actual meaning of the story. This book is about a young boy who is aggravated with his home life so he runs away to an imaginary island full of wild beasts that crown him their king. Although the moral of the story is to remember that the "home is where the heart is", because the protagonist ends up returning to his home, I better like the idea of escaping from somewhere you don't want to be and finding happiness elsewhere, for personal reasons. So I chose to remodel this book cover to reflect my opinion of the moral. I presented the main character, Max, being held in the arms of one the "wild things", Carol, with a large heart behind them. I added the quote from the book to better reflect the message I wanted to portray. I then decorated the cover with different natural aspects to tie in the feeling of being in a forest, or a place that isn't your home, and the "wild things" in the book.

The technical aspects of my book cover were very time consuming, but I feel the result was worth it. First I started with a photo of a forest that I took from the interweb and vectorized it and changing the opacity so it wouldn't take away from the main subjects. Then I found an image of Carol, one of the wild things, and created a silhouette from it. I used the wrinkle tool to make him furrier looking, adding my own touch. Then I found an image of Max, the protagonist, and created his silhouette. I then placed Max on top of Carol's object and used the brush tool to draw Carol to be hold Max in his arms. Then using the brush tool I drew a large heart to go behind them and used the "overlay" blending tool to make it transparent and saturated in comparison to the backdrop. Using the symbol sprayer tool, I added a border of autumn leaves and overlayed them over the backdrop as well. Then I added all of the text on the cover. I drew out the anchors in the word "wild" to make it look like it was growing up like a tree with its roots growing down. I added a subtle glow to the title and the quote to pull them forward and make them stand out a little. I made the author's name slightly opaque as to not draw attention to it.

Vector Exercise

What I did for this exercise is create the main text "let it be" and then expanded it so I could type along the path. Then I typed in the lyrics to the song "Let It Be" by The Beatles until it filled the entire path of the text. Then I added the subtle textured background for unity. Last I warped the main object so it looked like it was coming at you.

My Bedroom

After attempting to do my neighborhood project idea, some complications arose and I decided I would be better off photographing my bedroom. My concept for this is to show the progression of light in my room from morning to night. Starting on the left, early in the morning, and ending on the right, with late at night. I did this because my bedroom is where I spend of lot of my time doing homework and making my art, so it has been somewhat of a safe-haven for me. I experience it at all these different times of day. The color of light in my room is different throughout the day and it creates a different feeling in my room. I also chose to add the doorway into my room on the far left to make it feel as if you are about to walk into my room. I added a small peek of my bathroom on the right to add a little more depth of experience of my room.

To make this piece, I took 2 or three top to bottom photos of my room at different points in the day, starting with the dark early morning hours. Then I adjusted the lighting and contrast in each photo so one could easier understand the time of day in each column of photos. Then I began piecing the photos together, choosing to give the panorama a skewed compositional angle for interest. I added a drop shadow to my doorway and bathroom to pull the photos forward showing that they are different areas.

Space and Time Final Decision

I have decided to go with the panorama of the walk I make through the neighborhood everyday. I am going to take many pictures of what I see when looking left, forward, and right as I walk to and from campus. Then I am going to combine the photos in a linear composition with day time on the far left and night time on the far right and have the perspective of the photos match left to right as well. I haven't decided if I was the photos to transition smoothly or remain as they are when I put everything together because I don't know what either is going to look like. So I will decided that once I have all my photos.
